| Oconto County Commission on Aging, Inc. 1210 Main St. ~ Oconto, WI 54153 (920) 834-7707 or in Wisconsin: 800-649-6568 FAX: (920) 834-5070 The Benefit Specialist Program provides information, assistance and representation to Wisconsin residents age 60 and over with benefit and entitlement programs, such as Social Security, Supplemental Security Income, Medicare, Medical Assistance, Food Stamps and the Wisconsin Community Options Program (COP).
The Benefit Specialist Program in Wisconsin is funded by the Older American Act and State dollars. County dollars are added in some counties.
The Benefit Specialist can provide direct representation of older Wisconsin residents on certain issues. This may involve appealing a denial of eligibility of benefits under numerous government programs; and can represent their clients in file reviews and in-person hearings.
For low-income clients that need help with certain legal matters, the Benefit Specialist Program can help clients find reduced fee or free lawyers. The program is targeted to the rural, low-income and minority older population who have not had access to legal assistance.
Assistance can range from information about eligibility criteria and help in applying for an entitlement, to assistance in receiving benefits, covered services or appealing denials and terminations. Benefit Specialist services are free!
